MALIGNANT -

The writing and initial recording for this album happened in March 2023. At the time, I believed it would become a double album with each song leaning more towards a pop song structure as it progressed, with some pieces already being written. However, I kept coming back to Malignant and New Beginning. There was something about those pieces that created this beautiful juxtaposition between the cataclysmic end of Malignant and the sparseness of New Beginning. Yet I felt the album needed something between the two, Gently Fade Away.

Malignant is a four-part opus that covers a lot of ground. From its industrial beginnings to shoegazed psych, minimalist drone and heavy fuzzed out end. I was experimenting with a lot of new gear and techniques like feedback looping stereo effect pedals and sending signals through spring reverb and the Digitech Freqout feedback pedal.

Gently Fade Away is a piece that focuses on space. I wanted to create something minimal and mournful. Each passing note has a greater space between them. The only constant is the sub bass. So please listen to it on decent speakers for full impact.

New Beginning is heavily influenced by Brian Eno’s concept of self-generative music. Where the composer sets some parameters and watches/listens to what happens.

Everything on this album was played/captured, recorded, mixed and mastered by Alexander W. Sims.
